Rura
Rura is a Roman-Germanic river goddess who was worshiped in the first centuries of our era.
The only evidence of their veneration is a find from 1963. At that time , parts of an altar and the remains of a small building that could indicate a sanctuary were unearthed during work near Roermond (Netherlands), where the Rur flows into the Meuse . The top of the altar fragment is decorated with a cushion and fruit (apples and pears). Flowers tendrils are attached to the sides . The inscription on the front reads:
- SEX [TVS] OPSILIVS GEMINVS RVRAE V [OTUM] S [OLVIT] L [IBENS] M [ERITO]
- "Sextus Opsilius Geminus honored his vows to Rura gladly and of his own free will."
So it is a votive offering .
The stone is in the Stedelijk Museum Roermond .
