The Russell 2000 is an internationally esteemed stock index for small caps (small caps). It lists the 2000 smallest US companies weighted by market capitalization in the Russell 3000 .

calculation

The Russell 2000 is a price index and represents ten percent of the market capitalization of the US stock markets. The 2000 smallest stock companies of the Russell 3000 serve as the basis . The index is calculated using the value index formula, which indicates the total change in value as a measure. The Russell 2000 is not adjusted for dividend payments . Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index.

The investment universe includes all US-based companies that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NYSE Amex (formerly American Stock Exchange) and NASDAQ . The weighting is based on market capitalization. The investment and advisory firm Russell Investment Group decides whether to be included in the index . The composition of the index is reviewed annually. The calculation is updated every second during NYSE trading hours from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm local time (3:30 pm to 10:00 pm CET).

Historical overview

Russell 2000 Index 1978-2012

The Russell 2000 was developed in 1984 by the investment and advisory firm Russell Investment Group and was calculated back to 1978. It is defined in such a way that the index would have assumed the value 135 on December 31, 1986.

Milestones in the development of the Russell 2000 were December 31, 1999, when the index ended trading with 504.75 points for the first time above the 500-point mark, and March 6, 2000, when it first climbed to 601.64 points closed above the 600 point mark. By March 9, 2000, the index rose to a high of 606.05 points, which was its all-time high for half a decade.

The bursting of the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) also had an impact on the Russell 2000. By October 9, 2002, it fell to a low of 327.04 points. That was a decrease of 46.0 percent since March 2000. October 9, 2002 means the end of the downward slide. From autumn 2002 the Russell 2000 began to rise again.

The index passed the high of March 2000 on May 5, 2004, when it closed at 606.39 points. It also set further record highs in the following years. On January 9, 2006, the index passed the 700 mark for the first time with a closing level of 706.24 points. The 800-point mark first fell on January 31, 2007, when the index closed at 800.34 points. On July 13, 2007, the Russell 2000 closed trading at 855.77 points.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. On October 9, 2008 it closed with 499.20 points for the first time since September 30, 2003 below the limit of 500 points. The Russell 2000 fell to its lowest level since October 16, 1998 on March 9, 2009 when it ended trading at 343.26 points. Since the high on July 13, 2007, this corresponds to a decrease of 59.9 percent.

March 9, 2009 marked the end of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the stock market index was on the way up again. By April 29, 2011, it rose 152.1 percent to a closing level of 865.29 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the share index. On October 3, 2011, the price barometer ended trading at 609.49 points, 29.6 percent lower than five months earlier.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of companies. On January 17, 2013, the Russell 2000 marked an all-time high with a closing level of 890.36 points. The profit since the low on October 3, 2011 is 46.1 percent.

At the end of 2019, the index had almost doubled to more than 1,600 points.
