The Russell 1000 is a globally recognized stock index . It lists the 1000 companies in the US with the highest market capitalization . The Russell 1000 competes with the Standard & Poor's S&P 500 index .

calculation

The Russell 1000 is a price index and represents 90 percent of the market capitalization of the US stock markets. The 1000 largest stock corporations of the Russell 3000 serve as the basis . The index is calculated using the value index formula, which indicates the total change in value as a measured number. The Russell 1000 is not adjusted for dividend payments . Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index.

The investment universe includes all US-based companies that are listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NYSE Amex (formerly American Stock Exchange) and NASDAQ . The weighting is based on market capitalization. The investment and advisory firm Russell Investment Group decides whether to be included in the index . The composition of the index is reviewed annually. The calculation is updated every second during NYSE trading hours from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm local time (3:30 pm to 10:00 pm CET).

history

Historical overview

The Russell 1000 was developed in 1984 by the investment and advisory firm Russell Investment Group and calculated back to 1978 on a monthly basis. It is defined in such a way that the index would have assumed the value 130 on December 31, 1986.

A milestone in the development of the Russell 1000 was August 6, 1997, when it ended trading above the 500-point mark for the first time with 503.65 points. The index also set further record highs in the following years. On July 6, 1998, it closed with 604.61 points for the first time above the 600 point mark. The index passed the 700 point mark for the first time on April 12, 1999 with a closing level of 702.89 points.

On March 22, 2000, it closed with 800.06 points for the first time above the 800-point mark. By September 1, 2000, the index rose to 813.71 points, which was its all-time high for six and a half years. After the speculative bubble burst in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ), the price barometer fell to a low of 410.52 points by October 9, 2002. That was a decrease of 49.5 percent since September 1, 2000.

October 9, 2002 marked the end of the downward trend. From autumn 2002 the Russell 1000 was on the way up again. The index passed the high of September 1, 2000 on April 25, 2007, when it closed at 815.43 points. On October 9, 2007, the Russell 1000 marked an all-time high with a closing level of 852.32 points.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the index began to decline again. On October 9, 2008 it closed with 492.13 points for the first time since May 23, 2003 below the limit of 500 points. The Russell 1000 fell to its lowest level since October 1, 1996 on March 9, 2009 when it finished trading at 367.55 points. Since the all-time high of October 9, 2007, this corresponds to a decline of 56.9 percent.

March 9, 2009 marked the end of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the stock market index was on the way up again. By April 29, 2011 it rose by 106.0 percent to a closing level of 758.45 points. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the share index. On October 3, 2011, the price barometer ended trading at 604.42 points, which is 20.3 percent lower than five months earlier.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , which are basically unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 17, 2013, the Russell 1000 closed at 821.61 points, 35.9 percent higher than on October 3, 2011.
