The circus is considered the largest stationary circus in the world. Its event hall has 3400 seats with 23 rows, which are arranged like an amphitheater at a height of 36 meters. The Great Moscow State Circus employs several hundred artists. Occasionally he also organizes guest performances abroad, where he appears as the "Great Russian State Circus". A well-known clown who worked at the circus is the artist Antoschka, who lives in Germany .

The circus building was built until 1971 and opened on April 30 of the same year. Architects were J. Belopolski, J. Wulich and S. Feoktisow. During the renovation of the old Nikulin Circus from 1985 to 1989, the State Circus was the only theater of its kind in Moscow.

During the Soviet era, the circus was commonly known as the "Circus on the Lenin Mountains " ( Цирк на Ленинских горах ).
