Rustem Sakiyevich Khamitov (born August 18, 1954 in Dratschenino , Leninsk-Kuznetsky district , Kemerovo Oblast , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian politician of Bashkir origin. He has been president of the Russian republic of Bashkortostan since July 2010 .

Rustem Chamitow graduated from the Technical University "NE Bauman" in Moscow in 1977 . He then worked in various industrial plants of the Bashkir ASSR . During the collapse of the Soviet Union , Khamitov began his political career. From 1994 to 1999 he was Environment and Disaster Protection Minister of the Republic of Bashkortostan. In 1999 he moved to the Russian Federation's Disaster Control Ministry in Moscow. From 2000, Khamitov was on the staff of the Authorized Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for the Volga Federal District .
