life and work

Rut Bischler was born as Ruth Mundwiler and grew up with her parents, one older and one younger brother in Liestal. Here she attended kindergarten and primary school as well as her first cello lessons. She then completed the girls' high school in Basel and then the kindergarten teacher seminar. She then worked for years as a kindergarten teacher in Basel and Liestal . She also attended the conservatory in Basel and trained as a cellist with August Wenzinger , among others . In 1966 she married the special school teacher Hansruedi Bischler, with whom she lived first in Liestal, then in her own house in Hölstein . In 1973 she suffered a mental breakdown, which was followed by several hospital stays in the following years. After the divorce from her husband in 1984, she began giving cello lessons in Liestal and at times had over 20 students. In 1987 she became a permanent member of the New Orchestra Basel under the direction of Bela Guyas and participated in various chamber music formations .

In 1997, Rut Bischler began - in addition to psychotherapy - to paint regularly without instruction. In her pictures, which she was able to present several times in exhibitions and colloquia , she processed her experiences and feelings: “At the center of all pictures is a girl as the artist's alter ego, sometimes in a happy, sometimes in a depressed mood, often fighting with her environment . The imagery is reminiscent of illustrations in children's books, but on closer inspection it turns out to be ambiguous: the apparent harmony that appears in many pictures is unstable and endangered; the constructive and the destructive forces are in constant conflict »(Stefan Hess). Rut Bischler wrote some explanatory comments on her pictures.

A group of works by Rut Bischler is in the Liestal Poet and City Museum .
