Ruth Jones (born 1962 or 1963 in Newport ) is a British trade unionist and Labor Party politician .

Jones grew up in the Newport community of Gaer in Wales . After graduating from high school, she trained as a physiotherapist and then worked for the NHS in this profession for more than 30 years . She was also a union member, and in 2007 she was elected President of the Welsh National Association of Trades Union Congress . From 2016 she worked full time for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy union responsible for her profession .

After Jones ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the British House of Commons in the 2015 and 2017 elections in the Monmouth constituency , she won 39.6 percent of the votes cast on April 4, 2019 in the by -election in the Newport constituency made necessary by the death of her party mate Paul Flynn Voices the leap into parliament. The then 56-year-old was able to prevail against 10 opponents, including the former member of the lower house and current member of the National Assembly for Wales , Neil Hamilton ( UKIP , previously Conservative Party ). In the general election in December 2019 , she was able to defend her mandate despite losses of 8.6 percentage points.

Jones has children and lives with her husband in Allt-yr-yn Ward in the Principal Area of Newport.
