Ruth Anne Schmitz-Streit (* 1965 in Aachen , Germany ) is a German microbiologist and university professor .

Life

Scientific career

Ruth Schmitz-Streit received her diploma in microbiology in 1989 from the Philipps University of Marburg , where she was also awarded a doctorate in microbiology in 1992 for her work on enzymes containing molybdenum and tungsten in methanogenic archaa . From 1994 to 1996 she spent her postdoc at Berkeley, University of California , USA . The research topic was nitrogen fixation in Klebsiella pneumoniae . She then worked at the Institute for Microbiology and Genetics at the University of Göttingen until 2004 , where she completed her habilitation in microbiology with Gerhard Gottschalk in July 2001 . She then headed an independent research group as a Heisenberg scholarship holder. Since 2004 she has headed the Schmitz-Streit work group at the Institute for General Microbiology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . For 2017 she was awarded the Science Prize of the City of Kiel . In the same year she became president of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM).
