Ruth Shany

Ruth Shany or Shani (born November 9, 1923 as Ruth Nussbaum in Berlin ) is an Israeli artist who became known for her Chinese painting on silk .

Life

Ruth was born in Germany to Jewish parents and emigrated with her parents to Shanghai in 1939 , where she lived for 10 years. During this time she studied Chinese painting on silk with the Japanese art professor Taishi Nishio. In 1949 she came to Israel with her first husband Eric on the Conte Biancamano . The couple divorced shortly after arriving. Shany lived in a small pension and worked in various professions.

In 1951 Ruth married an officer and had a daughter. After his discharge from the army, Shany's husband worked as a farmer in Nazareth. But this marriage did not last long either. The couple separated and Ruth moved with her son to the Tel Aviv district of Tzahala . Ruth found work in a bookstore and later worked in a hotel.

In 1965 Ruth married the diplomat Itzhak Shany and accompanied the ambassador to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. As an ambassador's wife, Ruth Shany could finally afford silk fabrics and colors again and began painting again. After working in South America, the couple lived in Paris for five years and then in Geneva for a year. Ruth Shany then opened a gallery in Safed and worked here in her own studio. Since 2007 she lived in Ramat Hasharon .

Ruth Shani was a member of the Israel Painters and Sculptors Association. She has participated in numerous group shows and given solo shows around the world.

With her first husband Eric, Shany has a son, the filmmaker Daniel Wachsmann . Ruth Shany and her second husband have a daughter, Lana Laor.
