Slide (mining)

Principle drawing of a slide

In mining, a slide , slide , roller or roller drive is a construction that consists of inclined planes and is used for retraction . These slides are used in rock salt mines, especially in the Austrian and Bavarian mines, for example in the salt mines of Ischl and Berchtesgaden. But rollers were also used for driving in ping huts .

construction

The slide consists of two round logs laid parallel to each other. These trunks are processed with a plane so that they can be used for driving so that they are very smooth. These two woods called the Miner each as a slide beam , seat tree or slip tree . The two glide trees are one foot apart . In addition to these slides with two sliding trees, there are also slides with only one sliding tree. The Gleitbäume be, depending on local conditions, with an inclination of 22.5 to 45 Gon on the footwall mounted. The slide is constructed in such a way that it flattens out towards the bottom. This is necessary to slow down the speed. A rope attached to the joint at the top and bottom , which must not be tightly stretched, is laid between the two sliding trees . This rope has a diameter of 26 millimeters and serves as a hand rope while driving. To the right and left of the slide trees there are indentations as space for the feet of the driver. Stairs are installed next to the slide so that the miners can use the same mine workings again . There are resting platforms at regular intervals.

use

Use of the slide in the Hallein salt mine

In order to be able to use the slide for driving, the miner sits down on the trees with his legs apart. He holds on to the rope with one hand. For this purpose he wears a leather glove on his right hand . Then it can be glided down while sitting on the sliding trees. If he wants to reduce his speed while sliding down, he leans his upper body backwards. With the leather glove, he can also regulate the speed, depending on the grip. If the surface of the sliding trees is damp, the journey will be slowed down due to the friction. Entry is made easier with the slide and takes little time. However, the ride on the slide is not entirely safe.

  1. A staircase is a narrow staircase with narrow steps that are only used for ascending. The name Stiege is derived from to rise. (Source: Samuel Johann Ernst Stosch: An attempt to correctly identify some synonymous words in the German language. Second part. )
