Ruy Díaz de Isla
Ruy Díaz de Isla also Rodrigo Díaz de Isla (* 1462; † 1542) was a Spanish doctor.
Live and act
Díaz practiced as a doctor in Barcelona in 1493 and later in Seville , and he worked for ten years as a surgeon at the “ Hospital de todos os Santos ” in Lisbon . Díaz said he had treated Columbus' crew members for syphilitic ulcers upon their return from Central America . He had never seen such ulcers before. He concluded that the new disease had been introduced to Europe from Hispaniola (island of Haiti).
