Rybna Gate in Lublin

The Rybna Gate (also called Fish Gate) is located in the historic old town of Lublin in Poland . Its existence goes back to the 15th or 16th century.

history

The gate was probably built in the 15th century. According to sources, however, its existence can be proven in 1562 at the earliest. The gate with wide arcades formed the end of Rybna Street. Large numbers of fish from nearby ponds were sold in the square on Rybna Street. In 1596 the gate was the height of a two-story building. It was closed with an ornate roof. This gate was destroyed in 1862. During the reconstruction in 1954, the first and second floors were converted into apartments. The facade was at that time painting depicting a fisherman in the boat with network of Wladyslaw Filipiak, complemented by paintings with floral patterns around the windows. The paintings were difficult to see in 2013.
