The Rynek (German "Marktplatz", formerly also Friedrichsplatz ) is a square in the city of Katowice in Poland . It is one of the central squares in downtown Katowice.

Several streets meet in the square: Aleja Wojciecha Karfantego , ul. Warszawska , ul. Adama Mickiewicza as well as ul. 3 Maja and ul. Świętego Jana are the main axes . The Rawa River is also passed under the square . A trumpet melody has been played on Sundays since 2002, composed by an amateur musician from Bytom .

history

Location of the market square around 1823

As early as the sixteenth century there was an important crossroads for regional traffic in the area. In 1686, Jan Mieroszewski von Mysłowic and Rudolf J. Kamieński agreed with Świętochłowice on land disputes that affected the village of Katowice. These also include today's market and an inn on the river (today Rawa). An inn built on this site in 1816 was drawn in a lithograph by Ernest Wilhelm Knippel. Today the Dom Handlowy "Skarbek" is roughly there . In 1864 the building of the inn collapsed. The Hotel Welt was built opposite the inn in 1848 .

The former hotel "Welt"

In the mid-1850s, Heinrich Moritz August Nottebohm created a spatial planning plan for Katowice, which was to give the market its current form and also determine the north, south and east-west axes. Over the past 150 years, the face of the market has changed a lot, especially the north and south sides. Buildings 4 and 5, on the north side of the square, were demolished in 1938 as part of the expansion, the remaining buildings then in the 1960s. Buildings 6 to 9 formed the west side of the square, buildings 11 to 13 on the south side. Building number 11 has been preserved to this day and is now at ul. Warszawska 1. It was built in the former garden of the “Welt” hotel. The hotel "Welt" (number 12) was built in 1848, it was destroyed in 1945. The Dom Handlowy "Zenit" was built in its place . The hotel "de Prusse" was located on property number 13. The originally two-storey building was increased by one floor at the end of the nineteenth century. Towards the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, the regulation of the Rawa and the reduction of the ponds in the area of the Al began. Karfantego.

Friedrichplatz in Katowice

From the middle of the nineteenth century to 1921, the square was called Friedrichsplatz. Between 1922 and 1939 the square was called Rynek, from 1926 to 1939 it was also called plac Marszałka Piłsudskiego . In the period from 1939 to 1945 it was named Ring .

The square was originally much smaller. On the east side (Rynek 10), the city theater was built from 1907 to 1908 based on a design by the Cologne architect Carl Moritz . The old town hall was demolished for this. Today the Silesian Theater is located in the building . From 1926 the remains of the ironworks were removed and the Rawa channeled under the square.

On August 27, 1922, the celebration of the annexation of parts of Upper Silesia to Poland took place on the Rynek. On September 4, 1939, 80 defenders were shot by German troops in the courtyard of the Rynek building in what was then ul. Zamkowej. In 1945 parts of the south side of the square were destroyed, including the Hotel “Welt”.

In the 1950s a new spatial development plan for Katowice was drawn up. In the 1960s and 1970s, historic buildings were demolished and buildings in the style of socialist realism were erected in their place. The first building was the Dom Handlowy "Zenit" , which was built in place of the "Welt" hotel. As a result of this redesign, the square lost its closed shape and became a pure traffic junction for trams and cars.

The Rawa under the Rynek in Katowice

Since 2005 there have been plans to redesign the square. There have been various competitions for this purpose. In January 2010, three concepts for the renovation were presented, followed by a public survey on the three concepts in February. Around 2000 citizens took part in the public survey. Work started in 2011. A tunnel envisaged in the drafts was not realized. The renovation work began in March 2012, should be completed by the end of 2015 and cost 288 million zlotys .
