Saitō Ryōei
Saitō Ryōei ( Japanese 齊藤 了 英 ; born April 17, 1916 in Shizuoka Prefecture ; † March 30, 1996 ) was a Japanese entrepreneur and art collector.
He was honorary president of the Japanese paper company Dai Showa . Saitō died of a stroke at the age of 79.
Saitō collected art on a large scale. His collection includes two of the 10 most expensive paintings ever sold, Bal au moulin de la Galette by Renoir (acquired May 17, 1990 for $ 78.1 million) and Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Van Gogh (acquired May 15, 1990 for a then-record sum of 82.5 million US dollars)
Saito caused uncertainty after purchasing the painting Portrait of Dr. Gachet by saying in 1991: "Put the picture in my coffin when I die". The condition and location of the picture are no longer known.
The Saitō Ryōei collection is located in Tokyo.
