Rîșcani (German: Ryschkanowka, also Râșcani ; Moldavian Cyrillic: Рышкань; Russian: Рышканы) is a city in the Republic of Moldova and the capital of Rîșcani Rajon . It is located on the Copăceanca River and is over 22 kilometers from the Drochia train station . Two municipalities are co-administered by the city: Balanul Nou and Rămăzan .

history

Until their resettlement in 1940, many Bessarabian German families lived in the village, who called the village Ryschkanowka and who had co-founded it in 1865.

In the Soviet era there were many factories in Rîșcani, a state agricultural engineering school and tobacco growing. In 1973 the population was 12,000.

The parents of the future German President Horst Köhler come from the Rîșcani area.
