Sébastien Le Clerc (engraver)
Sébastien Le Clerc, the Elder (also Leclerc ) (born September 26, 1637 in Metz , † October 25, 1714 in Paris ) was an etcher and engraver from Lorraine .
Life
His father, Laurent Le Clerc (1590–1695) was a goldsmith in Metz. He learned the rudimentary knowledge of drawing and engraving from his father and the coppersmith Claude Bouchard. His first works are from 1654/55. His first important series was The Life of St Benedict and Les Modes de Metz in 1658/59 .
He also studied geometry, perspective and mathematics in Paris and in 1660 became a military engineer for the Lorraine governor, Marshal Henri de La Ferté-Senneterre
In 1665 he went to Paris and made the acquaintance of Charles Lebrun . Jean-Baptiste Colbert put him in charge of the tapestry manufacture . From 1672 he was professor of perspective at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture .
He had three sons:
- Sébastien Le Clerc the Younger (1676–1763) worked for Gobelin.
- Louis-Auguste Le Clerc (1699–1771) trained as a sculptor with Antoine Coysevox , worked in Denmark from 1735 and became a professor at the Kongelige Akademi for de Skonne Kunster .
- Jacques-Sebastien Le Clerc (1734–1785) became a painter and from 1778 taught at the Royal Academy of Painting.
