Sótero del Río Gundián (born March 29, 1900 in Cauquenes , † May 10, 1969 in the United States) was a Chilean surgeon and politician.

Life

Río Gundián graduated from the Universidad de Chile in 1922 with a degree in medicine and initially worked at the Hospital del Salvador in Santiago. After studying in Europe, he worked as a specialist in tuberculosis research in the capital's San José Hospital . He taught social medicine at the Universidad de Chile, he was also President of the Sociedad de Asistencia Social, Chairman of the Sociedad Médica de Chile and President of the Sociedad de Tisiología de Chile.

In the governments of the presidents Juan Esteban Montero , Juan Antonio Ríos , Gabriel González Videla and Jorge Alessandri , he headed various departments as ministers: social affairs (1931–1932), health and prevention (1943–1946, 1952), health (1959–1961) , Interior (1959-1964).
