The soccer game between FC Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart is known as the southern derby . These two clubs are among the most successful and at the same time most traditional clubs in southern Germany.

History of rivalry

The VfB Stuttgart is a founding member since the 1963-64 season represented in the Bundesliga while Bayern Munich two years later for the 1965/66 season came about. Since then, both clubs have been represented almost continuously in the league and have won both the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup several times . FC Bayern Munich has usually won the derby in the past.

According to the CEO of FC Bayern Munich Karl-Heinz Rummenigge , the game between the two clubs is more than a derby. That is why this one prefers the term southern classic. The rivalry is also shaped by the fact that many important VfB players switched to Munich in their careers, such as Jürgen Klinsmann , Giovane Elber or Mario Gomez .
