The southern Torstein Glacier is a heavily rubble-covered small or tiny glacier in the Salzburg part of the Dachstein massif , but due to the low activity, size and rubble content, one can only speak of a glacier patch or firn field .
Historical glacier stands and retreat phases
At the time of the glacier high position in 1850 there was probably a closed snow or firn cover on the northern roof of the Torstein up to the deeply embedded Windlegerkar, Friedrich Simony even spoke of a shared Thorstein glacier in 1884 . The observation of a right bank wall of the southern Torstein glacier and a left lateral moraine of the northern Torstein glacier suggest, however, that the two Torstein glaciers were only connected by snow or firn and not by a common nutrient area , even at the height of 1850 . In any case, at the end of the 1880s there were increasing signs that a small glacier in the Windlegerkar, the southern Torstein glacier, should be regarded as an independent ice field.
The localization of frontal moraines from the time of the elevation of 1850 is only possible to a very limited extent in the area, as the moraine material has slipped significantly. According to Erik Arnberger , the edge of the glacier used to be where the climb from the Windlegerscharte towards the Sulzenhalsweg suddenly turns steeply downwards .
