The Südstadtpark is an approximately 10 hectare green area on the site of the former William-O'-Darby barracks in Fürth .

history

After the magistrate of the city of Fürth turned to the government in 1876 with a request for a garrison, this request was granted on September 27, 1890 and barracks were built. After continuous use, including during World War II, these barracks were taken over by the US Army on July 25, 1945 and named after William O. Darby , a brigadier general in World War II.

On October 27, 1994, the US Army announced that the site would be evacuated, which was done by December 19, 1995.

The city council of Fürth then decided in February 1995 to hold an urban development competition, which was announced in February 1996. One of the goals stated was the creation of green spaces in as central a location as possible. In July of the same year, the jury awarded first place to Franz Pesch and Gerd Aufmkolk with their respective offices (Pesch & Partner Städtebau and landscape architecture office Werkgemeinschaft Freiraum).

The actual realization of the park was decided in 2000, whereupon the first preparatory measures were taken. All construction work was completed in August 2004. The park was opened to the public in September with a three-day public festival.

For the implementation of the plans for the Südstadtpark, around 5 million euros were transferred from the development and infrastructure contributions of the urban development contract.

terrain

The park measures 200 by 500 meters. 3.5 hectares of which are paved as a path area. These paths frame the park and are covered by trees. On the south side there is a skate facility, a climbing wall and playgrounds. On the east and west side there is an artistically designed square with water features and sculptures
