The South Tyrolean Volksbank AG ( Italian Banca Popolare dell'Alto Adige Spa ) is a regional bank based in Bolzano .

history

The bank emerged on August 1, 1992 from the merger of Volksbank Brixen, founded in 1889, and Volksbank Bozen, founded in 1902. In 1995 the Volksbank Meran, founded in 1886, was taken over. In October 2014, the boards of directors of Südtiroler Volksbank and Banca Popolare di Marostica (founded in 1892) agreed on a merger project that was approved by the members of the two banks in February 2015 and came into force on April 1, 2015.

In 2016, the bank's assets exceeded eight billion euros, which is why, according to statutory provisions, the members had to vote on a conversion into a stock corporation. On December 12, 2016, the transformation from a cooperative to a joint stock company was entered in the Bozen commercial register. The conversion and a simultaneous loss in value of the share were not without criticism. The right to withdraw from several hundred shareholders could only be enforced after several court decisions.

Shareholder structure

The Südtiroler Volksbank is in the hands of around 60,000 shareholders. The Volksbank share is traded on the Hi-MTF (MiM) electronic platform.

Business area

The Südtiroler Volksbank operates as a regional bank in addition to its home market of South Tyrol in the north-eastern Italian provinces of Trento, Belluno, Treviso, Pordenone, Vicenza, Padua and Venice. At the end of 2019, Volksbank had 169 branches, almost 1,300 employees, around 280,000 customers and over 60,000 shareholders.
