The Süsing is a large forest area in the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony .

geography

The Süsing is a large-scale forest and wooded area, mainly located in the Uelzen district, with foothills into the Lüneburg district . Extensive coniferous forests and (rather small) beech and oak forests with a high population of black and red deer characterize the Süsing, of which a 64.5 hectare sub-area (less than 2% of the total area) has been designated as a natural forest reserve since 1996 . In December 2007, the landscape protection for a peripheral area of the Süsing near Bardenhagen in the municipality of Bienenbüttel was lifted.

geology

The Süsing is located in the area of a Drenthe Age terminal moraine from the Saale Ice Age , which is the penultimate Ice Age about 165,000 to 210,000 years ago. The geological formations are 1.) Glacifluviatile deposits , i. H. Sand and gravel, transported by meltwater, 2.) ground moraine , d. H. deposited in place glacial till (clayey, sandy, gritty silt ), 3.) Beck deposits, d. H. siltier, e.g. Sometimes fine sandy clay that has settled in a glacial lake for a long time (the clayey parts that are transported further by the water, further away from the shore, the sandy, coarser ones more near the shore) and 4.) fluvial deposits (floodplain sediments ) of the Holocene in a valley that leaves the Süsing in a south-easterly direction and is oriented towards Oetzfelde and Ebstorf . The ice age deposits rise with z. T. pronounced steep slopes up to 113 m above sea level. NN . The groundwater outflows and thus the source areas of the streams are between 80 and 85 m above sea level. NN.
