Sōchō

Sōchō ( Japanese 宗 長 , Sōkan , Saiokuken ; * 1448 in the province of Suruga ; † April 11, 1532 ) was a Japanese Renga poet.

Sōchō was a student of the Buddhist monk and Renga master Iio Sōgi . With this and Shōhaku , another of his students, he wrote the Renga collection Minase Sangin Hyakuin in 1488 , which is considered one of the best works of this genre. After the death of his master Sōgi, he wrote Sōgi shūen ki (report on the last moments of Sōgi). Between 1522 and 1527 his memoirs Sōchō shuki ( 宗 長 手記 ) were created. Between 1530 and 1531 he wrote the diary Sōchō nikki .
