The Sơn La dam is a dam with a hydroelectric power station on the Black River ( Sông Đà ) in Vietnam . The construction period lasted from 2005 to 2012, with the damming and operation starting in 2010.

The structure is located in the province of S Provinzn La , about 340 km northwest of Hanoi and upstream of the existing Hoa Binh hydropower plant . The barrier structure is an RCC ( rolled concrete ) gravity dam and 138 m high. It was concreted since January 2008 and is the highest dam structure in Vietnam. The volume of the dam is 2.7 million m³. Sơn La will cost around US $ 2.5 billion .

Around 91,000 people had to be resettled for the reservoir .

power plant

The hydropower plant works with six Francis turbines with an output of 400 MW each, a total of 2,400 MW. Sơn La is the largest hydropower plant in Vietnam. The first machine went online on December 20, 2010, the last in October 2012. It is expected that 9 billion kWh can be generated annually . This corresponds to approx. 43% of the maximum possible annual generation of 21.024 billion kWh (8,760 hours * 2,400 MW).
