The Hoa Binh hydropower plant ( Vietnamese Nhà máy thủy điện Hòa Bình ) is located in Vietnam on the Black River ( Sông Đà ) in the province of Hòa Bình near the city of the same name and about 60 to 70 km southwest of Hanoi . It is operated by Vietnam Electricity (EVN).
The Đà, the most important tributary of the Red River , is dammed here by a 128 m high and 670 m long stone embankment to the largest artificial lake in Vietnam, the Sông Đà Reservoir . The dam was built from November 1979 to 1988; the power plant was completed in 1994. It has eight Francis-type turbines producing 8 × 240 = 1920 MW . The turbines and generators are in an underground powerhouse.
With an installed capacity of 1,920 MW, it is the second largest hydropower plant in Vietnam after the Sơn-La dam with 2,400 MW. Its average annual production of 8.16 billion kWh is only slightly below that of Sơn-La with 9 billion kWh.
