SP Austin & Sons

SP Austin & Sons was a shipyard based in Bishop's Wearmouth , Sunderland on the River Wear in north east England . The shipyard was known for its pontoon dock .

history

The shipyard was founded in 1826 by Peter Austin in North Sands am Wear, where he initially operated a repair slip with a horse-powered capstan . In 1833 the shipyard first moved to the premises of the Allison shipyard, only to be taken over in 1846 by the son of the company founder, also Peter Austin. As early as 1860, the yard was handed over to the third generation, who gave the yard its name, Samuel Peter Austin.

From 1869 to 1897, the shipyard was repeatedly expanded to include slipways and docks, taking the yards of John Denniston and William Pearson, among others, where they came across the Scotia Engine Works . In 1890 the former John Hutchinson shipyard was also taken over. At the turn of the century, the shipyard was known as The Wear Dockyard .

The shipyard, which was set up not only for the construction of new coal freighters, but also for conversion and repair operations, differed from others in its special pontoon dock , built by Swan Hunter and opened in 1904, with which, similar to a floating dock, ships up to 130 meters long emerge from the water lifted. The pontoon dock was not directly at the shipyard, but on the South Bank east of the Wearmouth road and rail bridge. In 1914 the shipyard was registered as SP Austin and Sons Iron Ship Builders of Bishopwearmouth panns, Sunderland .

After the Second World War , the shipyard merged with the Pickersgill shipyard, also located in Sunderland, to form Austin & Pickersgill , which finally gave up the traditional shipyard location in 1964.
