S190814bv

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

S190814bv was an event in which gravitational waves were measured. The event, which was recorded on August 14, 2019 by LIGO and VIRGO , represented a union of two astronomical objects. At least one of the objects had a mass that fit into the mass gap . The mass gap is the range between the minimum mass of a black hole at five solar masses and the maximum mass of a neutron star at three solar masses. It is nevertheless assumed that this recorded gravitational wave is a union of a black hole with a neutron star. After measuring the signal, the sky was searched for electromagnetic radiation, however, contrary to expectations, the researchers found no evidence that this event would emit radiation.

Individual evidence

  1. Black hole eats neutron star. In a galaxy far, far away, a black hole could have engulfed a neutron star. That would be a first for humanity - but there are still many unanswered questions. In: Spectrum Online. August 20, 2019, accessed January 1, 2020 .
