The company SAME , acronym for S ocietà A ccomandita M otori E ndotermici ( German  limited partnership for endothermic motors ), was founded in 1942 by the brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani in Treviglio ( Bergamo province ) in Italy and is now part of the SDF group, zu which also owns the Deutz-Fahr , Lamborghini , Hürlimann and Grégoire brands .

history

From 1927 until the postwar period of World War II

Cassani 40 HP tractor by Francesco and Eugenio Cassani

In 1927 the brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani designed and built a 40 hp tractor called Cassani, which was powered by a diesel engine - a type of drive that had been used in industrial, military and rail vehicles since the 1920s. It was a horizontal two-cylinder engine, which was designed as a two-stroke engine with a displacement of 12,723 cm³ and produced 40 hp at 550 rpm. The ignition was carried out with the help of a cigarette-like glow insert, which ensured that the fuel in the lines ignited better and the engine was started under pressure. The tractor had 4 gears (3 forward and 1 reverse) and reached a top speed of 15 km / h. The price at that time was 28,000 lire. The tractor designed by the Cassani brothers was sold under license by the Officine Gaetano Barbieri from Castelmaggiore .

SAME, founded in 1942, initially manufactured internal combustion and diesel engines for civil and industrial use, as well as winches, cranes, plows and fire pumps. In 1946 the first self-propelled, petroleum- powered mowers with 8 HP were built.

From the post-war period of World War II to the years of the economic boom

At the Milan trade fair in 1946, SAME presented the first self-propelled, three-wheeled mower whose engine was powered by petroleum and to which other machines and agricultural implements could be coupled. The company thus developed the first “all-purpose tractor”, which it launched on the market immediately after the Second World War.

1948 saw the birth of the SAME 3R / 10, a small all-purpose tractor with 10 hp, which was powered by a single-cylinder engine with petroleum; it had two drive wheels, a steering wheel, adjustable track width and a reverse gear. The Turin Agricultural Academy awarded him the gold medal: On October 24, 1948, the agricultural technology newspaper “Giornale dell'Agricoltura” described him as “a jewel of Italian industry”.

SAME Explorer

In 1950 the production of the petroleum-powered models began and the SAME 4R / 10 with 10 HP and the 4R / 20 with 20 HP were created.

In 1952 the DA 25 came on the market, the first industrially manufactured tractor with all-wheel drive, two-cylinder diesel engine with 25 HP and a displacement of 2280 cm³, 7 gears and a top speed of 24.3 km / h. The abbreviation DA stands for Diesel Aria, which indicates the air cooling which is a trademark of SAME. This is how the industrial production of vehicles with four drive wheels begins - an original all-wheel drive system that had already been developed in 1928.

In 1957 the new DA 30 DT was introduced. It came in eight different versions and replaced the DA 25. During this time, SAME also built various attachments, such as plows (with one or two ploughshares, discs or reversible), spring harvesters, disc harrows, milling machines, rear tractors, cutter bars, tippers, Irrigation pumps and drills. The first models of the DA 30 DT were orange with green wheels, but towards the end of the 1950s the color of the body and wheels changed to red while the engine was painted dark gray.

1958 saw the introduction of the SAME 240, which was referred to as an intelligent tractor, as it was first equipped as standard with the automatic SAC control (Stazione Automatica di Controllo) from SAME, with which the power of the power lift was controlled and that in the following Years in all vehicles. It had a two-cylinder engine with 42 hp, 6 forward and 1 reverse gears and reached a top speed of 28.9 km / h.

Deutz-Fahr combine harvesters

1961 was the year of the puledro (in German foal) and the samecar, a tractor with which one could do field work and, thanks to a box loading area, also transport objects. At the same time, a new engine series with 6 or 8 cylinders was developed.

At the Verona trade fair in 1965, SAME presented the new engines with a V-shaped arrangement of the cylinders and the Italia V, SAME Atlanta , Sametto V and 450 V tractors . Another significant change was the new body design, which moved from the traditional rounded lines to a more linear design language.

In 1965 the Centauro series came on the market with three models. They had a four-cylinder V-engine with 55 hp, a displacement of 3,500 cm 3 , 8 forward gears, 4 reverse gears and brought it to a top speed of 34.8 km / h.

In 1972 the Corsaro 70 and Saturno 80 tractors were presented. In 1973 SAME bought the Lamborghini Trattori SpA division from Ferruccio Lamborghini . and thus included some additional technologies in its product range, such as tracked vehicles and the fully synchronized transmission that Lamborghini Trattori was the first company to bring onto the market. In 1979 the Swiss brand Hürlimann Tractors was bought and the name of the group changed to SLH (SAME + Lamborghini + Hürlimann). This made SAME the second largest tractor manufacturer in Italy and one of the leading tractor manufacturers worldwide.

From the 1980s until SAME Deutz-Fahr was founded

SAME Explorer-II 60 Special

In 1983 the Same Explorer series was introduced, one of the most successful products in the company's history. These models were the first tractors in Italy to reach a speed of 40 km / h and were also the only ones to have a four-wheel braking system.

At the end of the 1980s, the SLH Group drew attention to itself with the introduction of the reversing camera: the so-called twin vision system. The engines from SAME also make a qualitative leap forward and the entire Series 1000, which was developed according to the principle of modularity, is now equipped with electronic injection.

In 1991, with the Titan series, the electronic powershift transmission (Electronic PowerShift) was introduced for the upper performance segment, while the Frutteto II was a model series for use in orchards and vineyards.

In 1995, the SLH Group bought the agricultural machinery division from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz, and SAME and a few other companies became SAME Deutz-Fahr.

As part of SAME Deutz-Fahr

In 2002 the Virtus series was presented at the EIMA .

The Walker series presented in 2011, with four wheels of the same size, is manufactured by Antonio Carraro .

The Iron series was replaced in 2012 by the Fortis series and the Virtus series. The smaller models of the Iron series and the Silver series were replaced by the Virtus series, which was designed by Italdesign Giugiaro . The larger models were replaced by the Fortis series, which was a further development of the Iron. The SAME Deutz-Fahr Group has been operating as the SDF Group since 2015.
