The SBB Am 6/6 , new name Am 861 , was a heavy shunting locomotive of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). It was mainly used for operations on the drainage mountain .

The Limmattal marshalling yard, which was largely put into operation in 1977, was designed for thermal traction in downhill operation. A requirement of six locomotives was calculated for operation. For this type of shunting operation, high tractive effort and a central driver's cab are required. In addition, the reserve for assistance in the event of failure of the electric train should be increased with a powerful diesel locomotive.

Technically, the Am 6/6 are derived from the DE2500 test locomotives ; Accordingly, they are equipped with three-phase asynchronous traction motors and Flexifloat bogies (without pivot pins and cradles). As early as 1963, the SBB took the initiative to build an experimental converter locomotive powered by catenary with asynchronous traction motors. In close cooperation with Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) the corresponding test vehicle Be 4/4 12001 was put into operation in 1972. The Am 6/6, based on the Be 4/4 and the DE2500, were intended as a further development step, which was then continued in the heavy electric shunting locomotive Ee 6/6 II .

Six locomotives with the numbers 18521–18526 were ordered in 1973 and put into service in 1976. Their electronics were modernized in the late 1990s. Today all four remaining locomotives have been decommissioned (as of the end of 2019) and are waiting to be demolished (as of April 12, 2020). The first (on 6/6 18524) was scrapped on January 26, 2004 and served as a spare parts dispenser.
