SCR-536

The SCR-536 handheld radio (SCR = Signal Corps Radio) was used by the US armed forces during World War II. Due to its small design with a weight of only 2.5 kg, the device was called a handie-talkie.

The SCR-536 (also known as BC-611) is equipped with five electron tubes , so-called battery tubes. The range over land is 2 kilometers, over salt water up to 5 kilometers. The battery life was specified with one day, i.e. 24 hours. The device works in the frequency range from 3.5 MHz to 6 MHz, the output power is 360 milliwatts, the type of modulation is AM . The device has neither a squelch nor a volume control. The device is switched on by pulling out the telescopic antenna and switched off again by pushing it together. The anode battery delivered 103.5 V, the heating battery 1.5 V. The radio set was tuned to the desired frequency with transmitting and receiving quartz and coils ( tank coil and antenna coil ). The device is still often offered at swap exchanges and has a certain value with collectors. Even today it can be operated by radio amateurs in the 80-meter band . Since it only broadcasts in AM, it is more interesting for collectors and nostalgics.
