Sercos ( Se rial R ealtime Co mmunication S ystem ; German " serial real-time communication system "), the automation bus is a worldwide standardized digital interface for communication between controllers and fieldbus (IEC 61491 and EN 61491). This synchronizes controls, servo drives, inputs and outputs, frequency converters, encoders, cameras, etc. with high precision and in real time.
history
In the mid-1980s, the Central Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) and the Association of German Machine Tool Builders (VDW) developed the specifications for an open digital interface.
The first generation Sercos I was recognized in 1995 and worked with a transfer rate of 2 or 4 Mbit / s.
The second generation Sercos II was introduced in 1999 and works with up to 16 Mbit / s.
The third generation Sercos III has been used in components since 2005.
Transmission medium
A fiber optic ring is used as the transmission medium for Sercos I and II; for Sercos III, communication takes place via the physical medium of Ethernet .

Properties of Sercos III are:
- collision-free transmission using a time slot method
- highly efficient communication protocol
- up to 511 participants
- Synchronization of 66 axes, for example, with a cycle time of 1 ms and a jitter of less than 20 ns.
