Waldstadt is a district of Karlsruhe . It was built in 1957 as a housing estate in the Hardtwald north of Karlsruhe city center. Today around 12,400 people live in the forest city.

history

The mayor at the time, Günther Klotz , was the source of the ideas for the district, who was looking for new, short-term solutions for housing construction in view of the housing shortage that prevailed in the post-war period - in the 1950s up to 12,000 families were registered as looking for accommodation in Karlsruhe.

The district was first popularly referred to as the unemployment forest, as many unemployed people lived there. In 1963 there were already 8,264 residents registered in 2,374 residential units. In addition to large rental apartment blocks, numerous single-family and terraced houses were built, resulting in a mixed population from different income groups. Due to the aging and the death of many owners in the early days, there is a change in the level of residents, especially in the large apartment blocks.

In the 1970s, the forest city in the east was supplemented by the Feldlage building area, and with the establishment of the European School in Karlsruhe, the forest city was expanded again to include the European settlement .

Economy and Infrastructure

At first, the infrastructure lagged behind the construction of residential buildings. The forest town now has a good infrastructure with seven kindergartens, five schools , three churches , three student dormitories and two old people's homes . In the cultural area there is the Waldstadt Chamber Orchestra, the Waldstadt Choir and the semi-professional theater Die Käuze . There are only a few restaurants, cafés or pubs. There are also only a few jobs (due to the lack of commercial areas). As a result, the forest town is still a satellite town .

Sports

Numerous sports are offered in the Traugott-Bender-Sportpark. There is also the fan pool in the south of Waldstadt, a sports and leisure pool.

traffic

The Waldstadt is connected to the Karlsruhe city center by tram line 4, which goes through to the main station without changing trains. The Waldstadt can be reached in the north-west via bus line 30, which, like line 4, connects the Durlacher Tor with the European School. Since the two lines each run on the edge of the forest town, the buildings in the forest are far from the respective stops.

Car traffic for the forest location is handled via Theodor-Heuss-Allee, which runs in the west of the forest town. The access to the field is via Gustav-Heinemann-Allee in the east. This concept minimizes through traffic in the forest town, but at the same time a car trip from the forest to the field (where the supply center is) involves a long detour.
