SG tent

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SG tents of various sizes are used in particular in disaster control and fire services. Here they are used as kitchen tents , medical tents , accommodation tents or the like, unless a suitable structural object is available.

The abbreviation “SG” stands for “pole scaffolding” or “medical group tent”.

A synonymous term in disaster control is the universal tent .

Sizes

SG 30 with the doors open

SG tents are offered in various sizes. The designation indicates the approximate (usable) floor area in square meters.

Standard tent sizes:
SG 12: 3.34 m × 4.08 m = 13.60 m²
SG 18: 4.34 m × 4.08 m = 17.70 m²
SG 20: 5.00 m × 4.74 m = 23.70 m²
SG 30: 6.00 m × 5.64 m = 33.80 m²
SG 40: 8.00 m × 5.64 m = 45.00 m²
SG 50: 10.00 m × 5.64 m = 56.40 m²

As a special version, the tents are also available with longer side poles, which results in a higher ridge height (2.85 m instead of 2.70 m) and a slightly larger base area. This version is identified by an additional zero, for example "SG 300".

Components

An SG tent consists of poles, connecting pieces, the tarpaulin, pegs and lines for fastening. Typical accessories are tent floors, partition walls and lighting and heating devices.

The tent poles are tubes made of aluminum or steel, they are divided into foot poles or support legs (with base plate) and roof poles, these in turn into gable - (ensure the height of the tent) and eaves or ridge poles (parallel to the ground in the longitudinal direction of the Tent).

The connecting pieces (also known as knots or bones) are made of plastic, die-cast or welded steel tube crosses. They are available in three-armed and four-armed versions, depending on the number of rods to be connected.

The tent tarpaulin consists of a cotton blend or plastic. The breathable mixed fabric is primarily used for accommodation tents, the washable plastic tarpaulin primarily for kitchen tents. On the lower edge of the tarpaulin there is a water-repellent coated "mud strip" in a dark color. Depending on the tent type or manufacturer, the entrances are either permanently connected to the rest of the tarpaulin or hung separately. Roll-up tarpaulin fields, the equipment with windows and further tent entrances are optionally available. Kitchen tents have a chimney outlet and special ventilation openings on the ridge. The tent tarpaulin is provided with tension rings, buckle belts and lashing straps for attachment to the poles and for tensioning, and is reinforced at stressed areas.

Building

The erection procedure is basically the same for all sizes: After selecting the construction site, the scaffolding poles are laid out, assembled using the connectors and then covered with the tent skin. Then the tent is aligned and attached. A pole scaffolding tent can be fully erected in about ten minutes with an experienced team.

For the construction of the scaffolding, one helper is required for each crossbar line, with the usual sizes there are three (SG20), four (SG30) or six (SG50) helpers. In addition, a manager should coordinate the construction progress and ensure compliance with a safe working method.

There are different methods of applying the tarpaulin, for example the manufacturer's information deviates from the (outdated, but still referenced in training documents) German disaster control service regulation 420; locally, different assembly and dismantling variants have also developed.

Particular emphasis should be placed on the correct bracing. The tents are not windproof without tensioning, even with proper tensioning, winds above 7 on the Beaufort scale are critical. Correct anchoring includes secure anchoring in the ground, here the wind force on the tent wall or even inside the tent when there are gusts is often underestimated. This danger should also be considered when using helicopters at the same time ( downdraft ).

The suitability of the installation site depends on the intended use. A construction in the meadow quickly leads to muddy and slippery floors. If necessary, a water drainage ditch must be drawn around the tent. Gravel pitches are better, whereas paved or asphalt surfaces make it difficult to secure them in the ground.

The erection of tents is in principle subject to the locally applicable building regulations for "flying structures", however, due to their low height, the SG tents mostly fall under the exception regulations and are therefore not subject to approval. For the construction, however, valid safety rules must be observed, which are established within the organization or by the responsible accident insurance institution (in Germany, for example, the employers' liability insurance association). This includes wearing work gloves and protective helmets if necessary. Typical accident hazards include stumbling over poles lying around or poorly visible guy ropes, injuries to the hand when putting the poles and connecting pieces together, head injuries from overlooking parts of the scaffolding at head height, injuries from unintentionally moving poles and falling scaffolding parts.

Executions

Medical tent

The medical tent is colored olive green or white. The tent skin is usually made of breathable, impregnated fabric. The variant with one entrance is rather unfavorable from a work-organizational point of view, two entrances and possibly additional removable or rollable tent sheets on the side should be preferred.

Accommodation tent

An SG tent can be equipped with camp beds and seating as temporary accommodation for emergency services or uninjured persons in need of care (e.g. refugees) .

Kitchen tent

The kitchen tent is colored white and has a ventilation opening and a fire-proof fireplace opening in the tent roof. This is necessary in order to be able to operate a field cooker inside the tent. The tent skin consists of washable, PVC-coated polyester fabric and can be rolled up on the side.

Guide tent

The command tent is used to enlarge a mobile meeting unit or a command vehicle .

Other uses

Other uses are possible as a covered food counter, canteen, children's play room and office for various purposes.

Manufacturer

The tents are produced and sold by various tent and textile manufacturers.
