SG Ruhr

The SG Ruhr (Sportgemeinschaft Ruhr) is an amalgamation of swimming departments from 3 Bochum and Hattinger sports clubs.

history

The SG Ruhr has existed since 2004 and has consistently improved the swimmers registered with it, so that they can achieve finals and medals at NRW and German championships as well as at NRW and German year championships. Both the first team of women and men are currently swimming in the 2. Bundesliga West . The women’s team has been swimming in the second division since 2004, as they took over from SG Hattingen-Welper, while the men’s team started in the Landesliga Westfalen in 2004 and within two years made it to the 2. Bundesliga West, in who she has been swimming since 2006.

Well-known athletes

An athlete is the long-haul specialist Britta Koiky . She is the reigning German pool champion over 5 km in the pool. The competition was held in Elmshorn for the first time in December 2008 and Koiky won the premiere. In addition, she is the reigning German runner-up in 1992 over 800 m and 1500 m freestyle and third place in open water over 5 km. She also won the premiere over 10 km at the NRW open water championships. In 2008 she was also the first female swimmer in the history of the SG Ruhr to win the NRW title in the open class. She succeeded in doing this at the NRW short course championships in Wuppertal over 200 m butterfly.

In the past, several other medal winners at German class championships also emerged from the ranks of the SG Ruhr. These include Mirko Opitz, Nadia Edling and Markus Schwarze.

Since 2004, medals at the NRW Open Class Championships have gone to Annika Meister, Marit Blömer, Karina Krüger, Mirko Opitz, Nadia Edling, Daniel Bauer, Vanessa Schenk and Britta Koiky.
