SIP Express Router ( SER ) is a free SIP - Server (implements the standard RFC3261). Which is licensed as free software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

SIP Express Router is a pure IP telephony solution that is used in particular by the larger service providers . SER takes on the setup and dismantling of telephone calls over the Internet and also provides many other services for Internet telephony. SER can be used quickly and inexpensively and is said to have high performance and scalability.

In contrast to Asterisk, SER is intended for larger VoIP installations. Both also work very effectively together by using SER as an exchange and routing the voice data via Asterisk. With this solution, the advantages of SER (many stable connections) and Asterisk (several available protocols) can be used at the same time.

history

SER was developed in 2001 by the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS) and later further developed by the newly founded company iptel.org . Some of the SER developers started a spin -off with the free software project OpenSER .

In November 2008, the SER developers announced that they would work together with the Kamailio project (the former OpenSER) on the further development of the server. The code was brought together as part of the SIP Router Project founded for this purpose . Kamailio 3.0 , released on January 11, 2010, is based on this new merged source code.
