The SJ A (II) were express train steam locomotives of the Swedish State Railways SJ with the wheel arrangement 2'B1 'h2. They represented a turning point in Swedish locomotive construction.

history

When the SJ needed a new express locomotive to replace older types, they procured 26 Class A (II) Atlantic locomotives from 1906 to 1909  . These machines, equipped with a superheater, were initially connected to a 3-axle type C tender. Between 1909 and 1911 they were equipped with a 4-axle type A tender.

In 1906 , the A 1000 reached the unofficial speed record for Swedish steam locomotives at 137 km / h .

Since a more powerful express locomotive was available with the F (II) series from 1914, the A (II) machines lost their importance for high-quality passenger train service and became dispensable.

Ostkustbanan - OKB A

In 1926 four locomotives were sold to Ostkustbanan (OKB) (A 1008 - OKB 15, A 1012 - OKB 13, A 1017 - OKB 14, A 1022 - OKB 16), and another followed in 1927 (A 1000 - OKB 22). These were converted into 2`C h2 locomotives at OKB in 1929. They kept their original kettles.

SJ A2

In 1930, the SJ had three units (A 1004, A 1007 and A 1021) converted to the 2`C h2 wheel arrangement, these were given the new series designation A2 . At the same time, they received the larger boiler of the B (II) and Gb series to further increase performance.

SJ A3 (I)

With the takeover of OKB by SJ in 1933, the five converted locomotives of the OKB A series came back to Statens Järnvägar. They received the new series designation A3 (I) in connection with their previous numbers.

SJ A3 (III)

Due to the lack of material in World War II , the A2 1021 in 1939 and the A2 1007 in 1940 received their original boiler back. In 1942 they were renamed to the A (III) series , into which the remaining A3 (I) series locomotives with the same numbers were also classified.

Use, retirement and whereabouts

All locomotives that were not sold on Ostkustbanen or converted to A2 were taken out of service between 1935 and 1939 due to advancing electrification. The remaining locomotives were used on Bohusbanan , in Småland and finally in Dalarna . The A2 1004 sided until their retirement 1969 under that name in service on their former main line, the Ostkustbane .

Museum locomotive

The A 1001 was intended for the collection of railway vehicles from 1937, today it is a cutaway model in the Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum in Gävle .
