SMEG (Smeg SpA) is an Italian manufacturer of household appliances for private and commercial use.
history
The company SMEG was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla , Reggio Emilia and originally specialized in enamel and metalwork. SMEG is an acronym, the historical name of which Smalterie - Metallurgiche - Emiliane - Guastalla translates as "Metal and enamelling plant based in Guastalla, Emilia-Romagna", still refers to the original activity. Today the family business is run by the third generation of entrepreneurs.
The entrepreneurial history of the Bertazzoni family goes back to the 17th century. Originally, the Bertazzonis worked as blacksmiths until they became manufacturers of free-standing stoves over the years.
In the second half of the 1950s, SMEG presented one of the first gas stoves with an automatic ignition, safety valve in the oven and cooking programming. In 1963 the production of dishwashers was started and in 1970 a 60 cm wide dishwasher with space for 14 place settings was developed. Hobs and built-in ovens followed in the mid-1970s. During this time the collaboration with architects and designers began. In the 1990s, SMEG completed its product range with sinks, extractor hoods and colored refrigerators in the style of the 1950s.
In 2008 the company had a turnover of 297 million euros, after 324 million euros in the previous year. For the year 2013, 462 million euros are mentioned as well as a profit of 18 million euros and 1830 employees.
Plants and subsidiaries
In Germany, the subsidiary SMEG Deutschland GmbH is active. SMEG is represented worldwide with 16 branches in Great Britain , France , Belgium , Netherlands , Germany , Sweden , Denmark , Spain , Portugal , Russia , Ukraine , Kazakhstan , South Africa , USA , Australia , Mozambique as well as two representative offices in Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia .
Awards
- Wallpaper Design Award: In 2009, the oven and hob from the Newson design line received the award for the best home appliance from the renowned international magazine.
- Good Design Award: In 2010 the Chicago Athenaeum Museum (Museum of Architecture and Design) and the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urbanism award the prize for the most beautiful oven and hob from the Newson design line to SMEG.
