SMS donation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An SMS donation is a cash donation using a Short Message Service (SMS).

background

With the strong increase in global mobile phone penetration from the turn of the millennium, the search for “mobile donation solutions” by donation-collecting organizations (also known as “social enterprises”) has increased significantly. Aid organizations in particular quickly realized that there is hardly a more efficient medium for making contact than the mobile phone when there is mobile phone coverage. And here it was in particular the sending of SMS messages that quickly gained in importance for the organizations.

Initially, the focus was on using the cell phone to organize one's own (aid) missions, but over time the interest in collecting donations with the help of the cell phone grew. Donation hotlines were known to a broad public through various television programs (in Austria, for example, through the ORF-sponsored campaign “Licht ins Dunkel”). At the beginning of the mobile phone boom, the only option was to donate by calling a donation hotline. With the onset of the SMS boom, donations by phone were expanded to include donations by SMS.

to form

The SMS donation is currently the most common form of donation using a mobile phone . Basically, the donation dialog using SMS messages is only one form of donation via the mobile phone. All forms of donation or fundraising with the help of a mobile phone can also be summarized under the term mobile fundraising .

Other forms of mobile fundraising that are already in use today are “mobile donation shops” (= an online donation site on the Internet via mobile devices ), “donations by phone”, whereby the donation amount is settled directly during the phone call via a payment processing infrastructure, and hybrid solutions , where the combination of website and SMS donation dialog is the most common combination. Hybrid solutions are increasingly being used in social networks and on the websites of the donation organizations themselves. Donations from mobile apps are also possible. These are small programs that can be loaded onto the mobile phone and contain one of the above-mentioned donation options (in addition to other content or functions).

SMS donation in Switzerland

SMS donations were established in Switzerland in 2010. The mobile network operators Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise support the service.

  • In Switzerland, unlike in Germany, SMS donations can be made using several speed dial numbers.
  • The tariffs vary between the mobile network operators and are on average around 7% of the donation.
  • Donations of CHF 1 - 100 can be processed.
  • The donations are correctly shown without VAT on the mobile phone bill and are tax deductible.
  • The cellular network operators only transmit the donor's phone number without a name or address.
  • In 2009, the DDX Association worked with telecom providers such as Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange to develop an SMS donation tool that gives end consumers the option of making donations via mobile phone. The donations will be charged directly to the phone bill. The number 339 is used to raise donations for charitable organizations, sports clubs, associations, etc.
