The SMT Scharf AG is a German engineering company based in Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to its own information, the company is one of the world's leading providers of rail-based transport solutions for people and materials and is geared towards difficult geological requirements in coal mining, hard rock and salt mining and tunneling. In 2016 it achieved a turnover of 43.6 million euros with 298 employees ( FTE ). The most important individual markets are China , Russia , South Africa and Poland . The company, which was founded in 1941, was then still trading as DBT Maschinenfabrik Scharf GmbH, and was sold by DBT GmbH, a subsidiary of RAG Aktiengesellschaft, to the private equity investor Aurelius in 2006. After changing its name to SMT Scharf, the company was listed on the stock exchange in April 2007 and was listed on the SDAX from 2012 to 2013 .
Products and key figures
The most important products of SMT Scharf AG are monorails and floor rail systems for the underground transport of material, equipment and people. The main features of these railways are their derailment-proof operation on a single, hanging rail or on a horizontal track as well as the distribution of the drive units over several units, namely driver's cabs, drive machines, transport beams (lifting beams) and transport vehicles. These are articulated with coupling rods so that tight curves and sharp changes in the angle of inclination can be mastered. Diesel or electric motors with hydraulic or electromechanical power transmission serve as the drive .
Other Scharf mining products include chairlifts and cable storage systems.
In addition to the delivery of new systems, the spare parts and service business plays a major role. The share of sales in 2015 was as much as 59% - which was justified as a short-term reaction to general industry and market developments with fewer orders for new systems from mining customers. Maintenance work and minor repairs are typically carried out on site, while larger work is carried out in our own workshops. To serve customers on site, own service companies have been set up in the most important export countries over the past ten years.
