The DBT German Mining GmbH (DBT) was from early 1995 to May 2007, a wholly owned subsidiary of "RAG Coal International" and thus belonged to the group of companies of RAG Aktiengesellschaft . The company emerged from the merger of three traditional mining suppliers - "Halbach & Braun Maschinenfabrik" and "Hermann Hemscheidt Maschinenfabrik" in Wuppertal as well as "Westfalia Becorit Industrietechnik" (formerly " Union Eisenhütte Westfalia ") in Lünen (North Rhine-Westphalia). In May 2007, DBT was taken over by “ Bucyrus International ” based in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , for 559 million euros , which in turn was absorbed in 2011 by Caterpillar .

DBT supplied complete system solutions for underground mining and was the market leader in longwall technology , consisting of hydraulic shield support , electro-hydraulic controls, conveyors , planing systems and crushers . The acquisition of the American mining supplier "Long-Airdox" in July 2001 complemented the DBT product range with its own shearer loader and expanded it to include solutions for chamber and pillar construction .

The sales of the DBT amounted to

  • 2000 - 349 million euros
  • 2001 - 448 million euros

The DBT Group consisted of 15 companies in eight countries with around 25 service and production facilities and was represented on all major mining markets in North and South America, South Africa, Australia and China. The DBT Group employs around 3,200 people worldwide, 60 percent of them outside Germany. The headquarters of DBT was located on the site of the former "Westfalia Becorit Industrietechnik" in Lünen and had over 1,100 jobs. The site of the "Halbach & Braun Maschinenfabrik" on Otto-Hahn-Strasse in Wuppertal was abandoned. Only hall 50 of the former "Hermann Hemscheidt machine factory" on Bornberg in Wuppertal remains; the remaining buildings were demolished in 2007, making way for a new auto center.
