Bucyrus International, Inc. (NASDAQ: BUCY) was an American manufacturer of mining equipment that was acquired by Caterpillar in 2011 . The company's headquarters was in South Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin . The German locations of Bucyrus in Dortmund , Hamm , Kamp-Lintfort , Lünen ( headquarters ) and Wuppertal will be continued by Caterpillar.

Overview of the company history

"Pan American" backhoe around 1904

The company was founded in the eponymous Bucyrus (Ohio) in 1880, but the headquarters were relocated to South Milwaukee (Wisconsin) in 1893 . In 1927 the company merged with the Erie Steam Shovel Company , the leading backhoe manufacturer of its time, and for a time was operated under the name Bucyrus-Erie .

In 1930 the company merged with the small English group Ruston & Hornsby Ltd. from Lincoln , which specialized in the sale of steam-powered excavators, with the aim of establishing a branch in England called Ruston-Bucyrus . These corporate policy developments subsequently opened up access to the world market for Bucyrus.

In 1985 the bad economic situation had an impact on the business situation and required the separation of departments that were not essential for survival. So the company sold its shares in Ruston-Bucyrus. In 1997, the long-standing competitor Marion Power Shovel was added to the group of companies.

Until 2007, Bucyrus' range was limited to products for opencast mining . With the acquisition of the DBT Group from RAG Aktiengesellschaft , the product range expanded to include complete system solutions for underground mining . DBT emerged in 1995 from the merger of the three traditional mining suppliers Halbach & Braun Maschinenfabrik and Hermann Hemscheidt Maschinenfabrik in Wuppertal and Westfalia Becorit Industrietechnik in Lünen.

In the first quarter of 2010, Bucyrus International acquired the conveyor division of Terex Corporation to expand its product range.

On November 15, 2010, Bucyrus approved the acquisition by Caterpillar for $ 8.6 billion. The transaction closed on July 8, 2011. The Bucyrus product range has been incorporated into the Caterpillar product portfolio.

Products and manufacture

Bucyrus International was known for selling steam-powered excavators and construction vehicles as early as the 19th century. Most recently, the product range included various types of large backhoe excavators as well as draglines and drills for blast holes in the mining industry. In competition with Marion Power Shovel , Bucyrus International manufactured hundreds of large machines for open pit mining as well as working machines for the construction industry.

Since taking over DBT, Bucyrus has also offered complete system solutions for underground mining , especially for longwall mining (consisting of hydraulic shield support , electrohydraulic controls, conveyors , planing systems and shearers ), but also for chamber and pillar construction .

Bucyrus International sold under the brands Bucyrus , Bucyrus-Erie , Marion and Ransomes & Rapier (in Ipswich, England).

Big Brutus is the nickname of the Bucyrus-Erie 1850-B, the world's second largest backhoe at the time it was built . It is the largest cable pull excavator with a shovel still in existence.
