Soleil ( French for sun , published in other countries as Crusader of Centy or Ragnacënty ) is an action-adventure game with some role-playing elements developed by Sega in 1994 for the Sega Mega Drive game console .

action

The hero named by the player is celebrating his 14th birthday, when he receives the sword of his long-dead father. After he sets out with the sword to inquire into the secrets of the world, he meets a fortune teller who apparently gives him the ability to communicate with animals. At the same time, however, it robs him of the ability to communicate with other people. In the search for the fortune teller, his dog Johnny and other animals with whom he becomes friends join him, and he reveals the secret of what happened in his country back then and where all the monsters that keep the world in suspense come from .

Game principle and technology

The player controls a young hero who wanders through a world viewed from above in the tradition of the Zelda games. This is divided into different sections, which are connected to each other in a map similar to Super Mario World . The aim of the game is to defeat various demons with the help of animals that you can rescue along the way. In the age in which one moves, these wage war against humans, whereby movements in time are also necessary during the course of the game to achieve the game objective and serve to explain the background story.

There are many borrowings from the classic Zelda games, both in terms of appearance and operation. The hero's main weapon is his sword, and a no small part of the game consists of solving jump and slide puzzles. Items or additional equipment are limited to permanent bonuses for the player and individual quest components . Magic-like abilities are acquired in this game through the animals that you liberate during your journey and with which the hero can communicate thanks to his special ability to talk to animals. Different animals can be combined and result in new or improved effects.

reception

The German-language online magazine Sega Forever praised a lovingly designed game world and particularly emphasized the level-up system as an innovative idea. The magazine only criticized a somewhat flat story.

The most famous review was printed on the cover of Soleil himself:

"Better than Zelda."

"Ultimately, Soleil has to bow to Zelda, because the path is simply too tight and there is little room for independent searches [...]"
