SPRN-2 prognos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SPRN-2-Prognos program (often referred to as Prognos for short ) is a Russian missile early warning program based on geostationary early warning satellites .

It is intended to complement the satellites of the Oko series and is completely independent of the older Prognos SO-M program (this was a civilian project to research the earth's magnetosphere). The first prototype was launched on October 8, 1975 with a Proton-K / DM-2 launcher , but this exploded in orbit. Since the last satellite was launched on June 26, 2008, sixteen satellites have been put into orbit from Baikonur with a Proton rocket, with two satellites always in active use. One on 24 ° West and one on 12 ° East. In addition, there are always two backup satellites in reserve at 80 ° East and 12 ° East. The satellites, built by Lavochkin, weigh about two tons and are launched under the code name Kosmos.
