SPT0418-47 is a young galaxy whose light took 12.4 billion years to reach us. An August 2020 scientific paper taught about various surprising properties of this galaxy. The galaxy, newly discovered a few years ago, shows a redshift of z = 4.2248, whereby a galaxy in line of sight at z = 0.263 could serve as a gravitational lens . It was this gravitational enlargement that enabled researchers to examine the galaxy in its state 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang with the help of the Atacama Large Millimeter Wave / Submillimeter Wave Array (ALMA) telescope . Computer-aided modeling technology was used to reconstruct the appearance of SPT0418-47 . The galaxy resembles the Milky Way in two ways: it has a central thickening (the bulge ) and its rotation corresponds to that of today's spiral galaxies in terms of the distribution of the movement speeds over the disk . It is thus arranged relatively evenly and is also the most distant known image of the Milky Way.

According to those used by the researchers cosmological parameters, the distance was (proper distance, English: proper distance ) for newly discovered galaxy time of issue of the received light today 4.7 billion light years . Today's distance is 24.4 billion light years.
