STR analysis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The STR analysis is a method of DNA analysis to determine short tandem repeats . The STR method is used as a STR profile analysis in criminology, forensic medicine and for paternity proofs.

properties

In the STR analysis, the number of short tandem repeats on several chromosomes is determined by DNA extraction with a subsequent polymerase chain reaction (PCR) . STR are microsatellites between two and thirteen nucleotides in length that occur in the genome hundreds of times in series on each chromosome. A parentage assessment using STR analysis compares two different samples. After the PCR, the amplified products are usually subjected to agarose gel electrophoresis or capillary electrophoresisseparated and proven. STR analysis can also be performed without DNA extraction.
