SYSTAT is the name of statistical software and various companies that have developed and sold this product or are still doing so.

Companies

The software Systat was developed from the late 1970s by Leland Wilkinson , a lecturer in psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago . Together with his wife, he founded the Systat company in 1983.

In 1995, Leland sold Systat to rival SPSS , whose SPSS Science Division continued to sell the Systat product in the scientific market. Wilkinson himself took on a managerial position at SPSS and the last 50 employees were also offered jobs at SPSS. As of 2002, SPSS focused on the area of economic analysis programs and sold Systat to the Bangalore , India-based and publicly traded company Cranes Software . For sales and user support, Cranes founded Systat Software Inc. in the United States, based in San Jose , California, as well as other national companies worldwide. In addition to the product of the same name, Systat also sells the SigmaStat software package , which is intended for statistical analysis and supports the user with various automated functions.

software

The development of Systat was initially carried out on Wang mainframes. When the first single-user computers based on microprocessors appeared, Wilkinson switched to this platform because the compilation times were much shorter there. The software was one of the first products in this market segment to dispense with copy protection . A version for Mac OS that was largely functionally identical to the Windows version was also on the market relatively early.

While the source code of the software of the product was still written in Fortran until 2005 , Systat was published in version 11 for the first time in a version written in C ++ from that point in time . Version 12 was released in spring 2007 with improvements in the user interface and various new features.

Functions

Systat supports various functions:

  • ANOVA / MANOVA / ANCOVA
  • Distribution adjustments
  • Bootstrapping Methods
  • canonical and set correlations
  • Classification and regression trees
  • Cluster analyzes
  • Correspondence Analysis
  • Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Discriminant Analysis
  • Factor analysis and principle component analysis
  • general linear models (GLM) and mixed model analysis
  • Quality analysis
  • logistic regression and probit analysis
  • Log-linear models
  • Bayesian regressions
  • Analysis of missing values
  • mixed regression-hypothesis tests
  • multidimensional scaling and perceptual mapping
  • multiple linear and nonlinear regressions
  • Robust regressions (LMS), (LTS), (S)
  • nonparametric tests
  • Cluster analysis, distance and similarity matrices, cluster validity indices
  • partially ordered scale analyzes
  • Path analysis (RAMONA)
  • Repeated Measures
  • Monte Carlo analyzes
  • Signal detection and spatial statistics
  • Smoothing modules
  • Ridge and Rank regressions
  • Post-hoc tests for repeated measures.

Further meaning

SYSTAT was also the name of a command in the TOPS-10 and RSTS / E operating systems from DEC , which indicated the current status of the current operating system to the computer user. This included the logged-in users, processes running on the computer, running I / O operations and other important system management information.

The Systat command is also present in operating systems that date back to BSD .
