Taweret with Sa loop

The so-called Sa loop , or just Sa , is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph that stands for "protection". The symbol has the number V17 in the Gardiner list and is assigned to the category "Rope, fiber and basket".

The origins of the sign are unclear. Presumably it is a rolled up reed mat, which served the shepherds as a transportable shelter and protected them, or a kind of papyrus life jacket worn by boat crews. The Sa loop is a characteristic attribute of the god Bes and the goddess Taweret , who were both protective gods in relation to pregnancy and childbirth. Like the ankh , the Isis knot or the Schen ring , the Sa loop is one of the ring-shaped knot amulets and was a magical symbol of protection.
