Mallorca , which belongs to the Marratxí municipal administration . Sa Cabaneta is located around 13 km northeast of Palma de Mallorca.
Sa Cabaneta is a place on the Balearic island ofhistory
From prehistoric culture between the 13th and 2nd centuries BC The settlement in Sa Cabaneta is already known, as the finds from the cave of Son Caulelles in Sa Cabaneta prove. In 1745 the place was founded and the church of Sant Marcal was built. The town, first populated by farmers and workers, quickly increased in population, as building activity began in the vicinity of Palma. In 1864 the suburb of Palma was taken over by Marratxí . In the early 20th century, the shoe industry was the employer of the people of Sa Cabaneta. From the second half of the 1950s, a social and demographic change began, which ensured further gradual growth. The proximity to Palma and the chaotic urban development favored the expansion as a residential area on the outskirts of Palma. In 2011, Sa Cabaneta had a population of 8,083.
Craft tradition
One of the oldest Mallorcan pottery traditions has been at home in Sa Cabaneta since the 17th century , here the so-called Siurells are made from white-burning clay. The Siurells are typical clay figures with an integrated pipe, which are characteristic Mallorcan ceramics and are only made and painted by women. As an instrument, they were previously used by farmers and shepherds to keep their flocks together. In some Mallorcan folk dances, the Siruells pipe is still part of the music today.
One of the traditional potteries still active in Sa Cabaneta today is Ca Madò Bet des Siurells , better known as Madò Bet . It was founded a hundred years ago by Isabel Amengual, today her daughter Francisca and her granddaughter Coloma continue the tradition. The models are diverse, from pseudo-mystical and mysterious fantasy figures such as animals, giants, demons and dwarfs to depictions of everyday life. The small traditional Siurells are usually between ten and sixteen centimeters high, but Siurells have been made half a meter in size.
The Ceramics Museum Museu del Fang Marratxí houses a large collection of Siurell figurines donated by Antoni Mulet in 1971. In 1938 archaeological excavations in Palma found figures that resemble today's Siurells and date to the 12th or early 13th century. It is not clear whether the clay figures originally come from Mallorca or were brought from Crete or Sardinia .
Another Sa Cabaneta tradition is the production of Ron Amazona by the Cañellas family distillery. It is a medium-sweet rum that is distilled in Mallorca in the old Cuban way. It is drunk as an aperitif and has been sold around the world for fifty years.
