Sa Domu 'e s'Orku (Sarroch)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nuraghe Sa Domu 'e s'Orku stands on a hill near the sea southeast of Sarroch in the metropolitan city of Cagliari in Sardinia . The name, which is more common on the island, denotes different types of monuments. It exists in different spellings and means "house of the Orku", a mythical ogre.

The (thus) archaic nuraghe, built from large irregular blocks, consists of two towers, which are accessed via a slightly trapezoidal inner courtyard, which is accessible from the main entrance. The two round chambers of the towers, in the very rare form without niches and stairs, are each vaulted by a slender, eccentric tholos . The older is the tower on the right side of the entrance while the tower on the left and the courtyard were added later.

The monument was excavated in 1926 and in the 1980s. Among other things, fragments of Mycenaean ceramics from the Greek Late Bronze Age were found, which prove that the area was directly or indirectly affected by trade with the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean.
