Saarland refinery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saarland-Raffinerie (SLR) was an oil refinery in Völklingen-Fürstenhausen , Saarland. The refinery was commissioned in 1967 as a subsidiary of Saarbergwerke . Due to overcapacity on the European refinery market, the Saarland refinery was no longer competitive and was shut down at the end of September 1985.

history

In order to secure a further mainstay in addition to coal mining, Saarbergwerke decided to start processing mineral oil in 1965. In addition to the purchase of the Frisia refinery in Emden, the construction of another refinery in Völklingen was also planned. Construction began near the Fürstenhausen coking plant in mid-1966 . The eleven were also involved in the refinery .

The refinery started operations in 1967 and was designed as a simple hydroskimming or heating oil refinery. To supply the refinery with crude oil, it was connected to the South European Pipeline (SEPL). This delivered the oil from the Marseille Europort to the Saarland and also to other refineries such as Miro in Karlsruhe.

In 1978, the petroleum distillation capacity was 3.6 million tons. Due to the lack of conversion facilities, the refinery as well as the Frisia had to market the uneconomical heavy heating oil at a loss, which severely restricted competitiveness.

Due to the tough competitive conditions on the refinery market in the 1980s, it had to cease operations like other refineries. The 18 hectare site was redeveloped by RAG and is being marketed as an industrial area.
